Priorities Ever attended a Community Gathering before? If not, attend the Babe Chick Orientation first! Orientation begins at 6:00 PM for any brand new pilgrims that haven't ever attended any community gatherings in the past. Potluck supper begins at 7:00 PM | Worship & Fourth Day Talk begins at 7:45 PM We can't wait to see you at our next community gathering! Your Fourth Days The purpose of the Walk to Emmaus is not just for self-benefit, but to strengthen the Christian Community and to develop Christian Disciples who will give their lives, sharing Jesus Christ. It is not the 3-day experience that matters, but what you do with your experiences during your Fourth Days. It is not a destination, but the beginning of a journey - a journey for the sake of those around you - your family, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, your church and all who come within your sphere of influence. The world may look different, but it is not. You have changed, but the world has not - that is the cold, hard reality. Bear witness, through your attitude, your actions, your words. We will be better than we were, but no better than anyone else. We are not a special breed or fraternity, we are Christians, the Church. You have encountered God in a unique way on your Walk to Emmaus. The experiences of your Walk may change the world, or may fade into obscurity. It all depends on what you do with this encounter during your Fourth Days. Below are the 15 topics covered during your Walk to Emmaus. 01 Priorities Priority - something of leading importance, 1st claim, shaping values for your life. Human beings are shaped by a unique capacity to make decisions about their priorities. What is your priority? Where do you spend your time, your money? What do you think about? If you don't set your priorities, they will be set for you! You have the capacity and reasoning abilities to set your own priorities, using your imagination, intelligence, willpower, PRAYER and the HOLY WORD! Remember - You make your choices, then your choices define you. 03 Priesthood of All Believers God's Love is shared by Christians called to the Church - to be priests to one another, a channel of Grace between God and people. We must all consider ourselves to be priests, partners of Jesus Christ. We make statements with all of our actions, inactions. Let care, compassion and love show in your eyes, in your actions, so that you can be a signal to the world. Remember that we are all Servants of the Lord. Open your eyes and your heart to those who see you, let them know you are there for them, whatever their need. Do not drive away those who need you. Are you approachable? Too many of us only feel comfortable with our 'circle' of friends and acquaintances - is that the signal Jesus Christ sent? 05 Life of Piety A life lived in relationship with God. Prayer is the language we use to communicate with God and to express our relationship with God. The Scriptures provide us with knowledge about the mind, heart and will of God. Characteristics of a life of Piety: attention, honesty, authenticity, communication and resourcefulness. Important spiritual practices are: prayer, scripture reading, meditation, worship, Holy Communion and spiritual direction. This new life is rooted in a living relationship with God, sustained by Grace through spiritual disciplines - giving one's heart to God 07 Means of Grace This new life in Christ is made real by means of sacraments and other sacred moments in which we celebrate Christ's overcoming death. The sacraments present Jesus Christ to us in such a way that we experience His presence anew in our lives. All Christian traditions recognize baptism and Holy Communion as sacraments. Other means of Grace include the sacred moments in which Jesus Christ is made real for us through symbolic action or ritual at critical moments in our lives. By Grace through faith the Holy Spirit renews our spirits through each and every means of Grace. 09 Obstacles to Grace Sin is pretending that we are the center of the universe - it is not about us or the Walk to Emmaus. We must trust in God in order to overcome the obstacles to Grace. The cross of Jesus Christ offers the means to overcoming the obstacles to our relationship with God (vertical) and our neighbor (horizontal). We can overcome sin by practicing the presence of God. This new life is not free from obstacles of sin, but Grace and discipline enable us to overcome obstacles and grow through them. 11 Changing Our World Ourselves - We are changed through prayer, study and action. Others - Bringing others to Jesus Christ and the church, through prayer, study and action. City, State, Nation - Through prayer, study and action. World - Other people and nations through prayer, study and action. Disciples will transform their environment by being a Christian presence in these four fields of ministry. 13 02 Prevenient Grace God's Love searches us out, seeks to redeem humanity and wants to give us a life in Grace. The reality is that God loves us and offers a relationship. God's Love pursues from conception onward. God's Love pursues us through the loving acts of others. We were created in his image, given the ability to reason, and hands and feet to implement our reasoning. We fell from Grace through sin but are offered Salvation in the reconciling work of Jesus Christ. 04 Justifying Grace The kind of Grace we experience when we honestly accept the relationship God offers us. We have all failed to respond to God's call to place our faith in Jesus Christ alone. The experience of Justifying Grace is also known as conversion, new birth, being born again, saved from sin or being born of the spirit. Salvation is both instantaneous and progressive, like two sides of a coin. It involves both Justifying Grace and Sanctifying Grace. Justifying Grace enables us to give our hearts to God. By God's Grace, we are accepted and set right with God in Jesus Christ. New life in Christ comes when we say yes to God's offer of Grace. 06 Growth Through Study New life in Christ involves growing through study of scripture, tradition and our world (giving our mind to God). Study is a discipline, the purpose of which is to transform our total life through the enrichment and renewal of our minds. Christians must study scripture to know God - and study ourselves, others and the world of which we are a part. We either grow or die in our spirituality - study keeps us alive. 08 Christian Action This new life is expressed by sharing Christ as a friend with friends - giving one's hands and feet to God, both in the church and in the world. This new life is characterized by a Jesus Christ-centered life and flows from a relationship with Christ. Christian life bears witness to Jesus Christ and carries on His work in all we say and do. Christian action is a natural response to God's Love and Jesus Christ's Grace. We give our hearts to Jesus Christ (Piety); We give our minds to Jesus Christ (Study); We give our hands and feet to Jesus Christ (Action). 10 Discipleship This new life is discipleship, life lived in Grace, following in Jesus' footsteps, growing in His likeness - giving heart, head and hands to God and responding fully to the relationship that God offers by devoting our lives to Jesus Christ. A Disciple demonstrates these natural qualities: knows priority, has discipline, knows reality, shows empathy, takes initiative and practices generosity. A Disciple demonstrates these spiritual qualities: a lively faith, humility, hope and love. Discipleship involves giving your life totally to Jesus Christ. 12 Sanctifying Grace Disciples continue to grow in the Grace of Christ through obedience to the Holy Spirit in the disciplines of Prayer and Service. The Holy Spirit indwells and empowers us to love as God loves - unconditionally. Sanctifying Grace empowers our entire ministry. Because God is infinite, our opportunities to grow in Grace are infinite. Sanctifying Grace is the process by which the Holy Spirit reveals to us the original righteousness. Sanctifying Grace is the work of the Holy Spirit in rooting out sin - moving us from imputed righteousness (what Jesus Christ did for us) to imparted righteousness (what Jesus Christ does in us when we open our hearts and minds to Him. 14 Body of Christ Disciples are called together to be the body of Christ, joining their gifts for ministry and mission to "the least of these". The primary purpose for the Walk to Emmaus is to strengthen churches and develop leadership for them. Everyone should have a plan of action for their life which embodies the principles explained in this Walk to Emmaus. The Church as it fulfills its mission to the world 1) will have order to utilize the gifts of all its members 2) is alive and giving 3) is an equipping agent which empowers its members to be Christ's representatives to the world 4) is humble and 5) is confident! Perserverance Perseverance is continuing to do something in the face of difficulty, to persevere in the life of Grace. Disciples of Jesus cannot make it alone but can persevere with strength from the Spirit through mutual support and accountability in Group Reunions. We must maintain contact with Jesus Christ and with other Christians. Weekly meetings with Reunion Groups; Emmaus Community Gatherings, Emmaus Teams - these are the premiums we joyfully pay, and the Blessings we are given, to persevere in a life of Grace. 15 Fourth Days Your three days are over, but Day Four begins and lasts for the rest of your life. This is the Walk to Emmaus' purpose: a lifetime of Discipleship, bringing new life to our churches and conveying Grace where we live and work. We have experienced God's Love, Jesus Christ's Grace and the Holy Spirit through gifts and sacrifices by our Emmaus Communities. Our mission now becomes bringing others into a relationship with Jesus Christ. The Pilgrims are being sent into the world to become a part of God's revelations of the Kingdom. Two dangers: 1) Believing you are somebody special; and 2) believing you are nobody. We should keep in contact with Jesus Christ and in contact with others, knowing and keeping our priorities. Christian life is an unending pilgrimage. Remember - do not try to change the world at once - Ourselves first, others second, and finally the community and world. If you have experienced God's Grace in a new way during your Walk to Emmaus, you have only experienced what millions have discovered in the last 2,000 years - but only a few attended a Walk to Emmaus! Be grateful but humble! You are not the first to find God or meet Jesus Christ or experience the Holy Spirit. The Walk to Emmaus is not the only way or even a major way that this is done. There is no record of Moses talking to other people about the Burning Bush, or that Jonah ever spoke of his experience in the belly of a whale. They were too busy living in Grace to exalt their past experiences. Pray, pray, and pray more! Your one-on-one with God is so important! Keep the Flame burning bright - We are fragile vessels with cracks and holes throughout us but by keeping our hearts and minds open, God's Love, Jesus Christ's Grace and the Holy Spirit will continuously pour down and into us, refreshing us and keeping the Flame burning bright!

You will enjoy three days of singing, learning, laughing, worshiping, reflecting, praying and participating in small groups. These talks present the theme of God’s grace, how that grace comes alive in the Christian community and how it is expressed in the world. You’ll also discover how grace is real in your life, how you live a life of grace, and how you bring that grace to others. You will have the opportunity to participate in the daily celebration of Holy Communion and to understand more fully the body of Christ. You will experience God’s grace through the prayers and acts of anonymous service offered by the Chrysalis community. You will leave with an experience of Christian love in action that will equip you for new levels of grace-filled service and leadership. What Happens After The Chrysalis? You are invited to have a closer walk with Christ for the rest of your life; this is called the Fourth Day. Those who attend a Chrysalis Weekend are encouraged to: Expand their own spiritual lives through worship, study and active participation in their local church Become more active disciples of Christ in service of the world To nurture this process of discipleship, the Chrysalis movement offers specific opportunities. First, groups of four to six people meet weekly to reflect on their spiritual journey and encourage one another in accountable discipleship. Second, there are monthly community gatherings where Chrysalis participants meet for fellowship, worship and instruction. Third, community members are regularly informed of the support needs of upcoming Chrysalis weekends, and other opportunities for servant leadership. What is A Chrysalis? A Chrysalis weekend is an experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation that begins with a three-day short course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God’s grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. The Chrysalis experience begins with the prayerful discernment and invitation from a sponsor. After one accepts this invitation, they complete an application. The Chrysalis leaders prayerfully consider each applicant and in God’s time, the person is invited to attend a three-day experience of New Testament Christianity as a lifestyle. Following the three-day experience, participants are joined in small groups to support each other in their ongoing walk with Christ. Through the formational process of accountable discipleship in small groups and participation in the Chrysalis community, each participant’s individual gifts and servant-leadership skills are developed for use in the local church and its mission. Participants are encouraged to find ways to live out their individual call to discipleship in their home, church, and community. The objective of Chrysalis is to inspire, challenge, and equip the local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, communities and places of work. Chrysalis lifts up a way for our grace-filled lives to be lived and shared with others. Mission: Vision: Empowering Leaders through Emmaus & Chrysalis to be the hands and feet of Christ Fourth Day Leaders Embodying Jesus Christ “I continue to dream and pray about a revival of holiness in our day that moves forth in mission and creates authentic community in which each person can be unleashed through the empowerment of the Spirit to fulfill God's creational intentions.” -- John Wesley
- Sponsor | Cross Country Emmaus
Frequently Asked Questions I want to sponsor a pilgrim. Where do I begin? First and foremost, begin with prayer. Consider it your first act of agape love for your potential pilgrim. Pray and ask God for discernment on your behalf. Next, lift up your pilgrim in prayer as you prayerfully consider asking them to attend a Walk or Chrysalis. Next, read through all of the questions on this page to make sure that you fully understand the responsibilities of sponsoring someone. As you consider sponsoring a pilgrim, please also prayerfully consider these questions for yourself. Am I emotionally, physically and spiritually healthy enough to sponsor a pilgrim right now? Do I have the time and energy it takes to fulfill the obligations/duties/requirements it takes to sponsor a pilgrim? (Ability to transport your pilgrim to/from the walk, collect letters from their friends and family members, attend Sponsor's Hour, Candlelight and Closing, continually lift your pilgrim in prayer, make and provide the required agape, etc.) Am I motivated by God's will in choosing/selecting a pilgrim, or am I motivated by my own wants/desires? How much does it cost for a pilgrim to attend a Walk or a Chrysalis? Registration fees for pilgrims are $240-This includes all of their lodging, food, etc. for the entire weekend. What if my pilgrim can't afford to pay for the registration fees? At this time, the Cross Country Christian Community itself does not offer scholarships. However, many of the local mini-communities offer scholarships for pilgrims, so feel free to reach out to your local mini-community director to ask about those. Also, often times, sponsors, churches or friends and family will pay the fee for a pilgrim as an act of agape. Therefore, you could consider reaching out to the pilgrim's local church to ask about scholarships there. Should I invite everyone on a Walk? Who should I consider? A 'Closer Walk with Christ' is right for many people, but it is not for everyone. Possible candidates for a Walk could be: Members of the church body who are the "quiet/behind the scenes" type folks-The backbone of the church if you may. Less active members of the church body who need their awareness of grace rekindled and their commitment renewed. Christians who are hungry for "something more" and want to grow spiritually. Church leaders (clergy and lay) who will bring new vision and vitality back to the church and who need renewal and to experience the grace unique to Emmaus. A 'Closer Walk with Christ' is intended to strengthen the local church. Some questionable sponsorship might be: Non-Christians and persons without connections to the church. Persons undergoing emotional crisis (recent divorce or severe grief) or who are psychologically unstable. A person who, in the past, has decided not to attend when presented the opportunity. What exactly is required of me, as a sponsor? As a sponsor, these are the things that will be required of you while your pilgrim is attending the 'Closer Walk With Christ': First and foremost, you will need to pray for your pilgrim, their family, their church, their pastor, and the other team members and pilgrims that will be attending the walk with your pilgrim. Bring two sets (85 pieces each) of pillow/or wearable agape to send-off for each pilgrim that you sponsor. Bring two food items to send-off for each pilgrim that you sponsor. Bring a minimum of ten letters for each pilgrim that you sponsor. Be sure to mark the envelopes with their first AND last name so they aren't confused with others. Take your pilgrim to dinner before send-off. Help calm their nerves during this time, answering any and all questions they may have with honesty and clarity. Take your pilgrim to send-off between 6pm-7pm to the Tabernacle at Big Country Baptist Assembly. Attend Sponsor's Hour in the chapel downstairs immediately following send-off. Attend Candlelight at 8:00 PM in the tabernacle on the last night of the walk (typically Saturday night). Attend Closing at 5:00 PM in the tabernacle on the last afternoon of the walk (typically Sunday afternoon). Offer to take your pilgrim to dinner on your way home (after closing on the last evening of the walk). Care for your pilgrim's loved ones and family during his or her Walk. Consider inviting them for dinner or prepare them a meal during the walk. Let your pilgrim's spouse/family know that their pilgrim arrived at the Walk, and all is well. After the walk is over, these things are expected of sponsors: Encourage your pilgrim to become active in a reunion group and Community/Mini-Community immediately after their return. Take or meet your pilgrim at the first Community Gathering after their walk. Help the pilgrim become more active in their service to God after his or her Walk. What information should I share with my pilgrim about the weekend? Your pilgrim will likely have LOTS of questions concerning a 'Closer Walk with Christ' weekend. Remember to answer any questions you are asked honestly. There are no secrets in a 'Closer Walk with Christ' weekend, only surprises, and they are incredibly difficult to describe anyways. Explain that each 'Closer Walk with Christ' weekend is unique and that each person seems to find exactly what God wants that person to experience. Some things pilgrims want to know about are small details that will make them more comfortable throughout the weekend, including, but not limited to: Pilgrims will share a hotel type room with one other pilgrim who has never attended a Walk to Emmaus. There are two full size beds in the room, and one bathroom. All bed linens and towels/washcloths are provided. They need to leave their watches, cell phones, pagers, clocks, radios, laptops and cameras. There will not be any cell phone service at the camp, so their phones will not work anyways. Explain that some of the activities (wearing of agape, table activities, etc.) are important, even though their importance may not be revealed until a later time. Remind them to have an open mind and an open heart when it comes to things that stretch them beyond their comfort zone. Let them know that in case of an emergency, the staff/team members will be able to get ahold of their family members. Assure them if they have a special diet, that the staff/team members will take care of their needs at meal times, as long as they indicate them on their application. Also assure them that they are more than welcome to bring any comfort items for sleeping, including small fans or special pillows/blankets. Answer any other questions they may have truthfully and let them know that you will find out an answer for them if you are unsure. I have prayerfully selected my pilgrim, and I'm ready to register them for the walk. What do I do next? Once you have prayerfully selected your pilgrim, you will want to register your pilgrim for the Walk. Applications are accepted in the order in which they are received. No one's name may be added to the Walk list until the application is filled out in its entirety, and the registration fee ($200) is paid in FULL. Names are added to the Walk lists, per the registrar, based on the postmark on the envelope, the completeness of the application, and the inclusion of the walk fee. Don't delay your pilgrim's placement by failing to complete the process in full. Applications need to be directed to: Women's Applications: Cindy Parker (254)212-9044 womenswalkcparker@gmail.com PO Box 53 Woodson, TX 76491 Men's Applications: Mary Beth Jordan (940)456-1294 mbethjemmaus@gmail.com 156 Thompson Newcastle, TX 76372 Where can I find the applications for the Walk? The application for a 'Closer Walk with Christ' can be found here. Where can I find the applications for the Chrysalis? The application for a Chrysalis can be found here. Where do I need to send the applications once they're complete? Applications for WOMEN'S walks or GIRL'S chrysalis need to be directed to: Cindy Parker (254)212-9044 womenswalkcparker@gmail.com PO Box 53 Woodson, TX 76491 Applications for MEN'S walks or BOY'S chrysalis need to be directed to: Mary Beth Jordan (940)456-1294 bethjemmaus@gmail.com 156 Thompson Newcastle, TX 76372 Can I pay my pilgrim's registration fee online? Yes! We now have the ability to pay for our walk fees using Venmo. Payments need to be directed to @FourC-Chritian-Community. Payments MUST BE labeled with the walk number and pilgrim name. For example: "Walk #123. Pilgrim Fee For: Sally May" Who should I ask to write a letter for my pilgrim? Letters are an extremely important part of the weekend, so spend some time to insure your pilgrim has AT LEAST 10 letters in your possession when you take them to send-off for the weekend. Be sure to have the pilgrim's first AND last name on the front of the envelopes. Ask one of your pilgrim's good friends or close family member to help you with making a list of family members and close friends to obtain letters from. You want to make sure that your pilgrim's pastor and spouse/immediate family members ALL write them a letter. Other recommendations for letters might include Sunday School teachers, close colleagues, church family, or members of the 'Closer Walk with Christ' community. However, aim for quality over quantity. If you need assistance in trying to explain to someone what kind of letter you're looking for, consider using this example letter: Dear ________________________, A 'Closer Walk with Christ' is a weekend of spiritual renewal with many beautiful gifts and surprises. One of the surprises is the mail that persons attending receive from their loved ones. ___________________ is going to attend a Walk to Emmaus. As sponsors, we are responsible for contacting family and close friends and asking them to send a note or letter to ______________ so that he/she will receive it during this special weekend. Since it will be a total surprise, we sometimes have to do a little detective work in order to get names and addresses of persons from whom we need help. Perhaps you’d like to pass this along to someone that you know _____________would like to hear from. This letter is an opportunity for you to express your appreciation of ____________ and what your relationship with him/her has meant and means. You might want to recall some humorous event or some happening that has been special to the two of you. This is a letter of love and WILL BE READ ONLY BY THE PERSON TO WHOM YOU WRITE. Would you help make ____________’s 'Closer Walk with Christ' weekend a little bit more special by doing the following: 1. Write a letter to _________________ and sign it. 2. Put it into an envelope and seal it. 3. Write _______________’s name (but not yours) on the envelope. 4. Put the envelope in a larger envelope and mail it to us prior to ________________so we can get it to the proper place on time. This should be a complete surprise to ______________ so please help make it special by keeping quiet until it’s over. We hope you'll help us by getting a letter to us. It will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, __________________ (Sponsor's Name Here) What do I need to do on the day of the walk? On the day of the walk, it is important for you to pick up your pilgrim, make sure they have eaten (or take them out to eat), and deliver them to send-off at the camp. Send-off will be held at the Tabernacle between 6-7pm. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by team members from their walk. They will guide you to your pilgrim's specific room so they can unload their luggage. While your pilgrim is unloading their luggage, you will want to discreetly hand a team member the following items: Your two sets of pillow agape Your two food items At least 10 letters (marked with your pilgrim's first AND last name) Before send-off begins, and after you've unloaded your pilgrim's luggage, you will want to gather near the tabernacle and visit with other members of the 'Closer Walk with Christ' community, team members, and other pilgrims that will be attending the Walk for the weekend.
